Polymer Science and Engineering is a key university directly under the Ministry of Education, the first in polymer science disciplines as the main type of college.
Sichuan University developed polymer science in June 1953 to establish the first university in the specialty of the polymer compound (renamed in 1954 as a professional engineering plastics), based on the Chinese Academy of Sciences Professor Xu Xi and so is the founder of the discipline.

2.Chemical Fiber Institution
Chemical Fiber Institute mainly focuses on the development and application of various chemical fibers. The research interests range from the synthesis of fiber-forming polymers, the spinning process and principle, the fiber modification and functionalization, the design and manufacture of spinning equipment and the application of chemical fibers. Institute has a full range of spinning equipment including melt spinning, wet spinning, dry spinning, gel spinning, centrifugal spinning and electrostatic spinning, and a full set of fiber testing equipment. The institution has a good foundation in the research field of chemical fiber and has accomplished various national fundamental research and industrial projects. Some research achievements are advanced in the world. The high-tech polyester filament has been successfully applied in Shenzhou series of spacecraft and other important military equipment. The high-strength and wear-resisting vinylon have been wildly used in the fabrics for PLA uniforms. The institution published more than one hundred academic papers and owned nearly 40 patents.
